Space Marshal Dylan McCade is an Audio Verse Award Winner!

Thanks to a timely message shot my way by audio drama guru and HG World creator Jay Smith, I found out this afternoon that The Adventures of Space Marshal Dylan McCade, our little audio serial that could and which was a finalist for three different 2013 Audio Verse Awards, managed to snag two of the three categories in which we were nominated!

Dylan McCade returned to the space ways as winner in the following categories:

Best Short-Form Writing of a Fan or Adaptation Production
and
Best Short-Form Original Adaptation of a Pre-existing Work

The awards were announced–appropriately–as an audio presentation, and you can hear all the awarding goodness here:

Once again, I tip my hat to David Taylor over at SciFi Commons, who approached me late in 2012 with this crazy idea of coming up with a retro pulpy sci-fi audio drama. He adapted my short story into script format, so the first of the two awards is all his. Then he brought together a troupe of talented actors and techie folks in order to bring the story to life, and they all get to share in the second award. Who are these people? Well, I’m so glad you asked:

Joey Trimmer (voice of Dylan McCade)
Ana Visneski (voice of Empress Entropia)
Kelli Taylor (voice of Jacquelyn ”Jax” Blake)
Senthil Masilamani (voice of Zan)
Kenneth Robert Marlo (voice of the President of the League of Planets)
Geno Younger (narrator)
Amy Herndon (sound effects)
Taylor Dixon (original music)

Many thanks once again to this awesome gang of players. Thanks also to everyone over at the Audio Verse Awards for hosting, judging, and presenting the awards. Finally, thanks to everyone who liked our little story enough to give it a vote.

We should probably do something like that again some time soon, huh?

Dylan McCade is an Audio Verse Awards Finalist!

Shut. The. Front. Door.

“No way!”

“Yes way, Ted!”

:: Ahem ::

Semi-final voting has completed for the inaugural Audio Verse Awards and finalist voting is now cooking with gas. Making the cut in three different categories is our favorite retro-pulpy SF hero of Days Gone By, Space Marshal Dylan McCade!

In what categories does the marshal find himself? Well, behold, yo:

  • Short-Form Fan/Adaptation Series
  • Best Short-Form Original Adaptation of a Pre-existing Work
  • Best New Fan/Adaptation Show of the Year

I’ll admit it: That last one in particular has me all tingly.

Now, it needs to be said that all of the nominations the show’s received are due to the efforts of David Taylor over at SciFi Commons, who took my pithy little “serial” story and adapted it for audio presentation. David then assembled a talented troupe of voice actors and sound gurus to breathe life into my goofy words and stuff. A vote for Dylan McCade in any of these categories is a vote of support for all the amazing work David accomplished, along with the efforts of these fine folks:

Joey Trimmer (voice of Dylan McCade)
Ana Visneski (voice of Empress Entropia)
Kelli Taylor (voice of Jacquelyn “Jax” Blake)
Senthil Masilamani (voice of Zan)
Kenneth Robert Marlo (voice of the President of the League of Planets)
Geno Younger (narrator)
Amy Herndon (sound effects)
Taylor Dixon (original music)

As I’ve mentioned during previous postings, voting for these awards isn’t open to everybody on the internet, but instead is contained within the “volunteer audio drama community.” From the Audio Verse Awards site:

“The purpose of these awards is to focus on how awesome the volunteer audio drama community as a whole is. The people who will be doing the voting is that community. You have to be involved with a production, or be actively part of the community, at any level, to vote.”

The complete list of categories and finalists is available just by clicking here.

Voting will open shortly, and run through December 14th, so if you’re involved in the audio drama community and there’s a show and/or performer listed you think is worthy of being so honored, please mosey on over to the Audio Verse Awards site and cast your vote(s).

Stay tuned for updates as voting concludes and results are announced!

AudioVerseAwards-Finalist

The Audio Verse Awards: Go vote for Space Marshal Dylan McCade!

Nominations have closed for the first ever Audio Verse Awards and semi-final voting is now underway. Guess who made the cut in nine–count ’em, nine–categories? That dashing, star-jumping hero of Yesteryear, himself: Space Marshal Dylan McCade!

As I mentioned in an earlier posting, voting for these awards isn’t being opened to everybody on the internet, but instead will be contained within the “volunteer audio drama community.” From the Audio Verse Awards site:

“The purpose of these awards is to focus on how awesome the volunteer audio drama community as a whole is. The people who will be doing the voting is that community. You have to be involved with a production, or be actively part of the community, at any level, to vote.”

So, for example, I can’t vote for any of the nominees, as I’m not “actively part of the community.” Meanwhile, the full list of nominees can be found here, and The Adventures of Space Marshal Dylan McCade is nominated in the following categories:

Actor In a Fan/Adaptation Leading Role: Joey Trimmer (voice of Dylan McCade)

Actress In a Fan/Adaptation Leading Role: Ana Visneski (voice of Empress Entropia)

Actress In a Fan/Adaptation Supporting Role: Kelli Taylor (voice of Jax Blake)

Best Small Cast Ensemble In a Fan/Adaptation Production

Best Audio Engineering for a Production

Writing of a Short-Form Fan/Adaptation Series (David Taylor)

Best Short-Form Original Adaptation of a Pre-existing Work (David Taylor)

Best Long-Form Original Adaptation of a Pre-existing Work (David Taylor) *

Best New Fan/Adaptation Show of the Year **

(* = Not sure how we got nominated in both long and short form categories, unless it’s voting for a single episode instead of the entire 6-part mini-series, but that info’s not listed. Therefore, I’d say go with “Short Form”)

(** = I think I’d pee my pants if we won this one.)

Semi-final voting is open from now through November 23rd, so if you’re involved in the audio drama community and there’s a show and/or performer listed you think is worthy of being so honored, please glide on over to the Audio Verse Awards site and cast your vote(s).

I still don’t know who did the nominating for Dylan McCade, but I’d like to thank that person/those people. It’s nice to see the marshal getting some love and attention, but congratulations are in order for all the nominees on the list. Stay tuned for updates as this thing proceeds!

“Dylan McCade” is up for an award?

Looks that way.

Earlier this evening, I was alerted to this little bit of coolness: It seems that our first Space Marshal Dylan McCade adventure has been nominated in several categories for something called “the Audio Verse Awards.”

Apparently, it’s something new, and rather than throwing open voting to the world at large, voting instead will be contained within the “volunteer audio drama community.” From the Audio Verse Awards site:

“The purpose of these awards is to focus on how awesome the volunteer audio drama community as a whole is. The people who will be doing the voting is that community. You have to be involved with a production, or be actively part of the community, at any level, to vote.”

Okay. That sounds pretty cool.

Anyway, there’s already a rather sizable list of nominations, so if this is your thing, and you know of a deserving audio drama production which isn’t yet represented, this would seem to be an opportunity to give that production some love. A nomination form is linked at the top of the page listing the current nominees:

Audio Verse Awards: List of Nominees

Nominations are being accepted through October 31st. I have no idea how the various entrants in any given category will be whittled down after that. I only just learned of this tonight, but I’ve put out a few feelers to see if I can get more info.

As for whoever did the nominating for Dylan McCade? Many thanks to that person. Guess we’ll see how the marshal stacks up. Stay tuned for more info!

“The Final Confrontation!” – Dylan McCade, Chapter 6!

Well, hopefully the time-delay blog posting thing works, and you’re reading this after it was posted on or about 2pm Eastern Time.

We’re here! The sixth and final episode of the first installment of The Adventures of Space Marshal Dylan McCade!

After five chapters pitting our heroes, Dylan McCade and Jaquelyn “Jax” Blake against whatever chaos and mayhem could be thrown at them by the diabolical Empress Entropia, the time has come for the ultimate face-off between our heroes and their arch-nemesis!

It’s been a fun little experiment, and I hope you’ve enjoyed it. I have some ideas on what a second adventure might involve, and how “big” we might want to go with presenting any new audio tales. We’ve only really scratched the surface here, and I know David and his merry band are keen to give this another go.

Meanwhile, if you dug this first of Dylan McCade’s adventures, I hope you’ll give the proper, well-deserved shout-outs to David and the cast of actors and the behind-the-scenes folks who did all the hard work turning my story into an audio tale:

JOEY TRIMMER as Dylan McCade

ANA VISNESKI as Empress Entropia

“Into Entropia’s Lair!” – Dylan McCade, Chapter 5!

I apologize for the delay in posting this, but as I’m at the big Trek convention in Vegas, I don’t have ready access to Internet connecty thingies. So, I wasn’t able to ring in an all-new installment of The Adventures of Space Marshal Dylan McCade!

Our little valentine to the pulpy retro SF serials of old seems to be something people are digging. I’m definitely giving serious thought to what we might do for a second adventure the right notes. Indeed, as I’ve listened to each new installment, I’ve started wondering what we might do for a second adventure.

But we still have to finish this story! So, mosey on over and listen to the latest chapter of McCade’s inaugural adventure, “The Terror of Entropia’s Ice Cannon!” The previous chapters also are available, all housed by David Taylor over at his Scifi Commons site:

“Target: Jupiter!” – Dylan McCade, Chapter 4!

Thanks to the wonder that is the time-delayed blog posting, you’re receiving this even as I wing my way through the friendly skies from Kansas City, on my way to Vegas!

Anyway, it’s a new day so that means an all-new installment of The Adventures of Space Marshal Dylan McCade!

So far, reaction to the first three chapters has been positive. Our little love letter to the pulpy retro SF serials of old seems to be hitting most of the right notes. Indeed, as I’ve listened to each new installment, I’ve started wondering what we might do for a second adventure. After all, there’s still a lot about Dylan McCade, Jax, Entropia and the whole gang that we don’t know. Guess we should think about making up some stuff, eh?

While we ponder that, you just wander over and listen to the latest chapter of McCade’s inaugural adventure, “The Terror of Entropia’s Ice Cannon!” The previous three chapters also are available, all housed by David Taylor over at his Scifi Commons site. Coming next week: The Adventures of Space Marshal Dylan McCade!

At long last Space Marshal Dylan McCade is making that jump from the Written Word to the Theater of Your Mind!

Tune in next week as McCade and his ever-dependable partner, Jacquelyn “Jax” Blake, face off against the evil Empress Entropia, who stands ready with a new weapon in her latest bid to conquer Earth, the Ice Cannon! Can McCade and Blake thwart Entropia’s diabolical scheme? Listen as the adventure unfolds in six exciting installments next week, August 5th – 9th.

“But, Dayton!” I can hear someone shouting from the cheap seats, “That’s only five days!”

Why, yes. Yes, it is, which means that you get a double dose of serialized action on Monday, August 5th. Check it, deputy marshals:

Awwwwwwwwww, yeah.

Late last year, David Taylor asked me if I might be interested in writing a story which could be adapted for audio drama, or even if I had something which might work as material for adaptation. As it happens, I had just such a story sitting in my files, written oh so long ago. Folks who remember my old AOL days might recall a Captain Proton riff I did way back when. Well, I dusted that off, reworked everything to freshen up some jokes as well as to remove any Proton/other-Trek related references, changed up a few other things here and there, and WHAM! One pulpy SF serial, ready to rock.

Next, David took my scribblings and with the able assistance of a talented troupe of voice actors breathed life into my words. He also went hog-wild with all sorts of nifty music and sound effects, creating what we all hope might be the first in a series of pulpy SF audio dramas featuring this cast of characters.

I guess that part depends on you, potential listener.

In addition to having new chapters released each day next week, the accompanying installment of the original story also will be made available, so you’ll get to see how David and his crew modified and adapted my prose story so it could be stuck between your ears. I found it to be a fascinating learning experience, myself.

So, watch this space for updates, as the first Adventure of Space Marshal Dylan McCade prepares to take flight!
