Well, better late than never, I suppose.
May was definitely a “Shifting things into gear” month.
It was a month of gathering together bits and pieces, of reestablishing contact with projects floating in limbo or perhaps thought lost forever. It was a month of reconnecting with past acquaintances and making new plans for the future. Several neat things I thought might not come to pass or would at least take forever to get going are showing signs of life. What does all this mean? Well, with just a couple of emails and phone calls, my summer has drifted off the trail of “What am I going to be doing?” toward the path of “How am I going to get all of this done?”
Don’t get me wrong. It’s a nice problem to have.
So, what’s going on? Have a look at the May rundown…
IncrediBuilds – Star Trek: U.S.S. Enterprise – Basically, it’s a wooden model you get to assemble, and I wrote the accompanying “book o’ info” about this, the Enterprise from the original Star Trek series. Expect the book to be stuffed with little trivia tidbits about both the ship from the show as well as the filming model’s creation and contribution to the series and pop culture. Everything’s been approved and the book has been handed over to the printer. This is slated for publication on Tuesday, June 12th, along with….
IncrediBuilds – Star Trek: The Next Generation: U.S.S. Enterprise – Pretty much the same as everything with its original series companion…just add a little “-D” after the word “Enterprise” and you’re good to go. This will be published alongside the other book/model set on June 12th.
Unidentified Tie-In Project – Yep. Another fun thing I can’t yet formally announce. This one is of the “burn hot/burn fast” variety, requiring quick turnaround on my end with respect to pretty much everything. How fast? I returned an updated manuscript to my editor back on May 22nd, and I’m currently awaiting further instructions. So far, the only thing I have so far as publication date is that it’s tentatively slated for May 2019, along with….
Another Unidentified Tie-In Project – A companion to the previous entry. I know what you’re thinking, and neither of these are Star Trek titles. Sorry! As with the previous project, there’s a need for me to be quick with my deliverables. I delivered an outline for this May 15th, and received word last week that the licensor had approved it with no changes requested. This is another of those very quick turnaround projects, and I’ve been working on it steadily since last week in order to meet its delivery date of June 7th. Yes, that’s this week. See? Told you it was quick. As with its companion, this one also is slated for publication in May 2019.
What’s That? Another Unidentified Tie-In Project – After being in limbo for what seems like ever, I was finally contacted last month and instructed by my editor to get on with fashioning an outline for this book, which has moved to the head of the line so far as Big Things I’ll Be Doing This Summer. My outline is due on June 18th, so now you know what I’ll be doing later this week after I deliver the other manuscript. More details as they become available.
You Guessed It! Another Unidentified Tie-In Project – Though this was something discussed with other parties back in the early spring, I’d thought it was DOA and promptly moved on to other things. A conversation over this past weekend has come in the wake of “revived interest” on the part of the client, so I fired off a list of potential story ideas to support the original pitch. If this goes forward it’ll be a lot of fun, so keep those digits crossed!
And Another Unidentified Tie-In Project – I delivered the manuscript for this on February 21st, and I’ve since received and responded to notes from my editor. I’m currently waiting for copyedits and other next steps. At present, this is slated for publication early in 2019. This one’s been a lot of fun, so far, and you all are never going to believe that they let me do this, not even when the proof rests in your hands. Here’s hoping I can talk about it soon!
And Still Another Unidentified Tie-In Project – For a new client. I’m calling it a “tie-in” not because it’s based on an existing media property, but because it’s a concept they’ve developed and pitched to me to help them flesh out and act as a “lead writer.” I sent an outline along with the first three installments of the actual story to its editor back on February 12th, and I’m presently awaiting feedback and direction on how to proceed. More details soon!
Other stuff in the pipeline:
Yet Another Unidentified Tie-In Project – After submitting a revised outline to my editor last August, I’ve been in limbo since then while we await a response from the licensor. No worries…I mean, it’s like I’m drowning in free time or anything, but I’d really like to get on with this one. Here’s hoping.
Possible future projects:
Original SF novel concept – Something I’d started a while back, refreshed some older notes and added some new ones. This one’s been on the back burner for a while, because…well…look up at all that other stuff. I’ve been giving this one some thought lately, as it’s the sort of thing I can scribble about during lunch breaks and such at work. I’d like to get it to a point that I feel comfortable approaching at least one editor with it. I guess we’ll see.
Original e-Book concept – I’ve been pondering an idea for a new series – something akin to the “men’s adventure” style books I loved back in the 80s and 90s. It would be a setting for which I could write shorter tales – novellas, likely – for e-Book distribution. It would be something of an SF-ish/action bent, with (I hope) lots of humor. Not quite campy, but definitely lighter in tone. This is still very rough at the moment, but it’s something I’d really like to get into once I get some free time (HAH! HAH AGAIN!).
Okay, June. Let’s do this.
