Now that’s more like it.
Bucs 26 – Saints 19
Tampa rookie quarterback Jameis Winston is still a work in progress, but he seemed able to shake off most of his inauspicious NFL debut last weekend. In and around a smattering of field goals, he was able to guide the Bucs offense on a couple of impressive touchdown drives, passing for one and running for the other. Meanwhile, Tampa’s defense kept the pressure on Drew Brees and the New Orleans offense, even managing to pick off the veteran QB and pick up a couple of Saints fumbles.
However, it wasn’t all rainbows and unicorns. Even though Winston avoided throwing interceptions, Tampa still coughed up the ball a couple of times, and those along with several late and costly penalties allowed the Saints to stay in the game and get oh-so close to tying it up to force overtime. Yeah, that was a bit of a nail-biter, but the Bucs hung on, then got the hell out of the Superdome before the Football Gods changed their minds.
The win definitely helps Winston’s journey as Tampa’s starting quarterback. It’s also a victory over a division opponent, which is always helpful. The Bucs improve to 1-1 while the Saints drop to 0-2 and the cellar of the NFC South. Both Carolina and Atlanta won, improving their own records to 2-0. Next up for Tampa? Traveling to Houston to take on the Texans, who suffered their second loss of the season to the Panthers today. So, they’ll be hungry next week in front of their home crowd.
Anyway, a win’s a win, right?
