In October of 2000, Pocket Books published the first in a series of Star Trek adventures exclusively in electronic form: Star Trek: Starfleet Corps of Engineers. An experiment to study the potential interest in Star Trek stories in “e-Book” form, a trilogy of novellas was produced and made available for sale. Customer response was such that more stories were commissioned, eventually resulting in a regular series of Star Trek: S.C.E. e-Books published in a variety of electronic formats, running monthly until November 2007.
In January 2002, the first four Star Trek: S.C.E. adventures were collected into a mass market paperback collection, which collects the following stories:
#1, The Belly of the Beast – by Dean Wesley Smith
#2, Fatal Error – by Keith R.A. DeCandido
#3, Hard Crash – by Christie Golden
#4, Interphase – Book 1 – by Dayton Ward & Kevin Dilmore
