In June of 1998, Pocket Books published their first-ever anthology of Star Trek short stories, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The book grew out of a writing contest Pocket sponsored to attract new, hopeful writers (such as this bonehead you’re reading about) and give fans a chance to see their Star Trek fiction professionally published.
Through some wicked twist of luck, the editors decided that my story, “Reflections,” warranted inclusion in the anthology. My wife tried to convince them otherwise but happily for me, they weren’t listening. Thus the story behind my first professional writing sale, in which James Kirk is confronted by the way events might have played out had he not been onhand to participate at certain crucial points in his past.
