Happy Birthday, Star Trek!

“Space…the final frontier….”

These are the voyages where the legend began, 46 years ago tonight!

As I’ve no doubt blabbed on countless occasions before, I’ve been a fan of Star Trek for as long as I can remember. Too young to watch the show during its original run on NBC, I caught the reruns every day after school. Back then, without DVDs or streaming, I had to wait for my favorite episodes to cycle back around in the rotation every couple of months or so. Anybody old enough to have perched a tape recorder up next to the TV speaker so you could record an episode’s audio track onto cassette tape? I’m also old enough that I watched the animated series on Saturday mornings, and as it happens, it also celebrates its birthday, having premiered 39 years ago today).

Now, we literally have the show at our fingertips. I have DVDs on the shelf (saving up for the Blu-rays, yo) as well as my video mp3 player and even on my iPhone. Then there’s all the stuff: books, comics, games, toys, models…you name it. Show somebody a picture of the original Enterprise or start humming the theme song, and people know what you’re on about. Of course, they might think you’re off your meds, but that’s their problem, right?

So, here’s to a Happy 46th. Keep on Trekkin’!(Artwork by Russell Walks)
