All kinds of old-school movie action headin’ our way!

Looks like I’ll be heading to the movies a bunch of times in the coming weeks.

Yes, there are some recent or pending releases I’d like to go see. I still haven’t made it to The Dark Knight Rises or Total Recall. The Expendables 2 is waiting in the wings. Meanwhile, there’s some good, old-fashioned rollickin’ cinema coming down the pike. Check this out:

First up? Coming to Cinemark theaters for one night only on August 23rd is Jaws, in celebration of the new Blu-ray release. I’ve never actually seen this one on the big screen. I was “too young” when it was first released. My father took me to see Jaws 2 and later Jaws 3-D, but the original has eluded me in glorious big-ass-o-vision all these years. So, there no way I’m missing it this time. Check to see if it’s coming to your town.

Next up? Monday, August 27th: Another one-night engagement in celebration of its 30th anniversary: Fast Times At Ridgemont High. This is another one I didn’t see in theaters, which is odd considering I was 15 and it has Phoebe Cates…well…you know. Anyway, this one looks like it’s going to be a bit of a party, with Kevin organizing a meetup of sorts. It’ll also be my first time at the newly re-christened Alamo Drafthouse here in KC. Can’t wait to check out an Alamo screening. Hey bud, let’s party.

But, the BIG ONE? Has to be this: The Man With The Hat.

AMC is getting set to host a one-week engagement of Raiders of the Lost Ark, IMAX-ified, from September 7th-13th. It’s another promotion, this time for the upcoming Blu-ray release of all four Indy movies. I remember having an absolute blast watching this one the summer it came out, but what I don’t recall is now many times friends and I went to see it. Had to be double-digits, though. I’ll almost certainly try to get to this one, which is good, as I likely won’t be able to make the one-day-only Indiana Jones Marathon set for September 15th. All four Indy flicks. Check the link to see if Indy’s whipping his way to a theater near you.

Just remember to bring your own catheter.

The last time I did a movie marathon of any sort at a theater was 15 or so years ago, when a local theater screened the four Alien movies, with the proceeds going to charity. The one I remember most fondly was the “Sit Long and Prosper” marathon, screening what at the time was the five Star Trek films on September 8th, 1991, in honor of Trek‘s 25th anniversary. We got our first real look at trailer footage for the then-upcoming Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Michi and I drove from Albany, Georgia to Atlanta to attend that. I swore off movie popcorn for six months or so after that.

Okay. Movie time! Who’s with me?

  1. Yes. Phoebe Cates. That scene still makes me feel like a teenager.

  2. I’m an old geezer and saw all those you mention, well, not Fast Times…, in big screen. I could tell you how many times I saw Raiders, but the last day it was in town on the original release, I attended a matinee and was the sole viewer. Felt good to see the big screen solo.

There’s a small indie theater here in KC that used to run older movies for one-week engagements, so I ended up seeing a lot of films on the big screen for the first time there. This sort of thing has become more common in recent years, and Alamo seems to be one of the big drivers. I’m so happy we have one here in KC now. I hope it gets the patronage and support it needs to stay here.

I think that Star Trek marathon was the last one I sat through, as well. Sadly, Star Trek V wasn’t any better than I had remembered. And I haven’t seen that one again since then. *shudder*

It’s nowhere near the top of the heap, but I’ll watch it before I watch most of the TNG films.

Which reminds me, I haven’t seen any of the Next Gen films since I saw them on the big screen, either. And, come to think of it, with STV I can at least tell you what happened in the movie and why I had problems with it. I couldn’t tell you anything about Nemesis except that there was a dune buggy scene.

Awesome that you’ll get to see those classics on the big screen, especially Indy. And you guys suck for getting an Alamo Drafthouse; we need one way up here in the Northeast! (On an Indy-related note, I really hope they Lucas won’t screw with the Blu-ray versions the way he did with Star Wars. Spielberg must stop him this time.)

But Total Recall? Expendables? Bah! Stick with the superior ’80s versions. ;)

  5. I remember the “Go Ape” marathons with all five Apes movies. I even did the Cornelius makeup for my make-up final in college. Drove all the way from my house to campus in chimp makeup. Didn’t get a second look. Ah, Silicon Valley … so unflappable even way back then.

i haven’t seen a movie in theaters since 1999, but all 3 (yes, i have issues with #4) indy movies would be tempting, if there was a theater near me doing that.

Lay it on me.
